About Us

The Bowness Responsible Flood Mitigation (BRFM) Society was formed by concerned residents of Bowness in response to the City of Calgary’s decision to build flood barriers in our community, along the Bow River. BFRM aims to be the voice of residents of Bowness who have a common goal of finding responsible and effective flood mitigation solutions that protect the community and the natural river environment.

BRFM believes that the best approach to flood mitigation is to keep the water out of the City and we are seeking upstream flood mitigation on the Bow River as the best and first priority solution to preserving and protecting the natural river environment and our community. Governments have proposed this for other communities. BRFM advocates for equal treatment of Calgary citizens and communities.

BRFM would like to ensure the Bow River ecosystem, including fish, bird and animal habitat will be maintained. The current proposal from the City requires mature trees that stand in the path of the proposed berm be removed, which in turn will increase erosion and reduce animal habitat.
